In an insightful interview, Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi disclosed his creative influence on the character development in the iconic film Munna Bhai MBBS. Warsi, who first graced the screen in Tere Mere Sapne, experienced a meteoric rise to fame with his portrayal of Circuit in the 2003 hit movie. Despite the character’s lasting impact, particularly through memes, Warsi revealed that ‘Circuit’ was not the original name intended for his role. The actor, known for his work in Asur, also shared his extensive improvisation throughout the film’s scenes.
During a conversation with Prabhu Chawla, Warsi expressed, “The character’s initial name was Khujli. His wardrobe and mannerisms were vastly different. Just hearing the name ‘Khujli’ might give the impression he would do nothing but scratch. That alone would spoil the entire persona.”
Warsi’s insistence on changing not only the name but also the attire of his character in Munna Bhai MBBS was a testament to his commitment to the role.
Reflecting on his debut in the film, Warsi stated, “For my first movie, Munna Bhai MBBS, I had to improvise significantly. At that time, director Rajkumar Hirani was not fully aware of my comedic style, which led me to add my personal touch to almost every scene.”
Sanjay Dutt, who played the titular role, was notably supportive of Warsi’s creative input. Warsi recalled, “Sanju and I shared great chemistry. There was no sense of ego; we relished our collaboration. There were moments when I would suggest, ‘Sanju, you deliver this punchline, and I’ll follow with a reaction.’ He was always receptive to the ideas.”
